While performing as part of a punk band in the early 1990’s, the young 19 year old Leslie Feist damaged her voice during a cross Canada tour. While her voice was never quite the same, it was almost a blessing for the Canadian songwriter/singer. It’s her seductive, beautiful, and soulful voice which made us fall in love with her 2004 album, “Let It Die”. Think somewhere along the lines of Cat Power, Regina Spektor and a hint of Dusty Springfield. If you haven’t heard of Feist, we’re sure you’ve hear of her music. As part of the thriving Toronto indie scene, Feist is part of the critically acclaimed group, Broken Social Scene. As well, her “Let it Die” single, ‘Mushaboom’, has been used for Lacoste’s recent commercial campaign. And with her catchy, fun and sincere songs, we wouldn’t be the least bit suprised if the songs from her latest and third album, “The Reminder”, will be used in the next 30 second spot.
“The Reminder” is a great progression and a sign of artistic growth from Feist. Working again with fellow Canadian artists, Gonzales, the album is solid with songs such as ‘1, 2,3,4′, ‘My Moon My Man’, ‘So Sorry’ and ‘How My Heart Behaves’. Her excellent melodies, lyrics that make you smile, are superb but again, it’s her unique voice that makes this album what it is. It’s warm, relaxing, chilled out and light. Exactly what’s needed during the summer.
